Managing Director, Upwardly Global Chicago - Chicago, IL

This is an opportunity for an exceptional leader, experienced entrepreneur, skilled manager and salesperson/fundraiser with a track record of proven results. The Managing Director will work closely with the Executive Director/Founder to launch the Chicago office, implement the model, and grow the results, program and team of the Chicago branch office. This talented individual will have responsibility for producing significant social impact for at least 500 immigrants from 94 countries in the first three years and for partnering with America's leading employers to create lasting social change through the implementation of immigrant inclusive hiring practices.

We are seeking a rare individual who can move quickly from strategy to implementation, who has both big vision and can manage the operational details, and is comfortable moving between the largest multinational corporations and small nonprofit organizations. The Chicago Director will have a proven record of sales and fundraising results from corporations and high net worth individuals, as well as significant experience with earned income strategies. The Chicago Director will combine strong leadership, proven management experience and creative problem-solving with resourcefulness in the service of social change. The Director will have a passion for our vision and the communication skills to connect others to it.

The Managing Director joins a management team of committed, ambitious, creative, action-oriented and inspired professionals. In addition, the Director joins and will commit to continuing a history of success as Upwardly Global has been recognized for its leadership and innovation by the John F. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Fundraising and Financial Management - The Managing Director has responsibility and accountability for a $400K annual budget.
  • Team Management, Development and Coaching - The Managing Director will have 2-3 direct reports in 2008 and oversee the entire staff team as it grows.
  • Program Development and Management - The Managing Director drives results and reach of both our Jobseeker Services and Employer Network programs.
  • Public Relations and Presentations - The Managing Director serves as the primary local communicator for our vision of a workforce that optimizes the talents of immigrant professionals.

Desired Qualifications:

Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience, with significant enterprise-building, fundraising/sales and leadership experience. Relevant for-profit experience with community involvement experience as a volunteer or board member also desirable.

Proven fundraiser or experienced salesperson with quantifiable results. Established Chicago donor and corporate network highly desirable.

Industry experience and contacts in workforce development, human resources, corporate change management, staffing or placement highly desirable.

Minimum of 5 years of progressive management experience.

Master's degree (or foreign-degree equivalent) in business, public policy or other related field required.

Demonstrated ability to produce and motivate/manage others toward quantifiable results.

Exceptional communicator, written and verbal

Embraces problem-solving within ambiguity, highly flexible, and thrives in a small team environment.

Proven experience in leading incremental improvements within an established model.

Highest level of integrity, professional pride, and maturity.

Sense of humor

Compensation: Salary range: $85,000 - $95,000 depending on experience, with bonus potential. Health insurance, life insurance, 403B and generous vacation package included. This position will be located in Chicago, IL with 10% national travel.

Placement Specialist - New York, NY

Upwardly Global is an award-winning nonprofit forging a new frontier in social entrepreneurship. Working in partnership with top-tier corporations such as JPMorgan Chase and Pepsi Bottling Group, we work to create professional opportunity and success for highly-educated and experienced immigrant professionals in the United States . Ranks of legal, foreign-born professionals formerly forced to work as cab drivers, nannies, and security guards in the United States have been able to move from the margins of the working poor and return to their careers with the help of Upwardly Global. In our second year in New York City , we are building the infrastructure to scale our operations from serving 200 jobseekers annually to serving 750 annually over the next three years, expanding our corporate partnerships, volunteer base, and outreach.

Upwardly Global is steadfast in its core belief in the potential of immigrant professionals and the power of corporations to create large-scale social change while achieving bottom line results. Position Description:

The Placement Specialist will report to the Manager of Employer Partnerships and will have the primary responsibility for creating interview opportunities at companies and organizations in a range of industries for Upwardly Global’s jobseekers. He/she will be expected develop contacts across industries through cold calling, attending conferences and professional networking events to generate leads, and cultivating Upwardly Global’s existing volunteer base for support in placement efforts. This person will also work directly with Upwardly Global jobseekers to understanding their skills sets and professional backgrounds in order to generate the most appropriate opportunities for them.

Required Qualifications

The Placement Specialist should have a strong track record of success in outplacement, job development, or other applicable background. Able to understand our jobseekers’ past professional experiences and transferable skills, this individual should be both resourceful and creative in finding “yes” opportunities for the jobseeker and expanding our base of Upwardly Global champions across industries in the New York City community of professionals. Demonstrated perseverance and optimism in achieving challenging goals is a must.

The successful candidate for this position will be a results-oriented professional who loves to help the underdog win. The ideal candidate will be a self-directed, optimistic, high energy professional who is flexible and comfortable operating in a start-up environment. In addition, this person will possess the following qualifications:

Job Search Advisor - New York, NY

The Job Search Advisor will report to the Managing Director and is the main relationship manager, coach, and advisor for Upwardly Global job seekers. He/She has the primary responsibility for establishing trust and rapport with the job seeker, understanding the jobseekers’ backgrounds and skills sets, starting them on the path to better marketing themselves through their resumes and cover letters, and managing their learning, development, and job search progress.

Responsibilities include:

  • Resume development and revision
  • Job research and fit assessment
  • Cover letter preparation
  • Coaching jobseekers in interview skills and marketing themselves
  • Monitoring and managing mentor relationships with jobseeker for maximum impact
  • Assessing overall applicant readiness to be introduced to employer partners at various milestones during the program
  • Managing exposure to Upwardly Global’s alumni, volunteers, and corporate partners to achieve placement
  • On-going relationship management with jobseekers
  • Sharing participant progress with fellow Advisors to maximize collective learning
  • Tracking and reporting on metrics and outcomes to Managing Director

This is a great position for anyone with a background in teaching, human resources management, corporate training, outplacement services, or workforce development.

The successful Job Search Advisor will be passionate about Upwardly Global’s mission, have superior interpersonal and motivational skills, and a results-oriented mindset. The ideal candidate will posses an excellent overall intellectual capacity and judgment, excellent communication skills, and be comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment.

  • Extremely well-organized, detail oriented, able to efficiently manage multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Highly resourceful and flexible, able to find smart ways to make incremental changes within a process for greater impact.
  • 3-4 years of post-college work experience with a successful track record
  • Teaching and corporate experience a plus
  • BS/BA or foreign degree equivalent required
  • Master’s degree from a leading program desired
  • Must be able to attend events during nights and weekends

Employer Outreach Assistant - San Francisco, CA (Americorp VISTA)

The Employer Network Coordinator will be responsible for developing and growing the Employer Network program to increase placement outcomes for Upwardly Global jobseekers.

  • Identify industries and companies in which to develop relationships based on analysis of jobseeker and organizational need
  • Cultivate contacts in a variety of industries through cold calling; attend networking events and job fairs to develop leads
  • Conduct industry research to build prospect lists
  • Present jobseekers for open positions; provide employers with ad-hoc education and coaching on hiring immigrant professional candidates
  • Additional projects as assigned: May include coordinating Employer Network events, database clean-up and management, and assisting with the Employer Newsletter

Required Qualifications:

  • BA or BS or equivalent foreign degree credential.
  • 1-2 years of professional experience preferred
  • Interest in and/or experience in sales/business development highly desired
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and phone communication skills.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Sense of humor and flexibility essential.
  • Some weekend and evening work may be required
  • Demonstrated perseverance and optimism in achieving challenging goals a must
