BearingPoint and Upwardly Global

A mutually beneficial partnership

BearingPoint Discovers Upwardly Global -- March 2004

BearingPoint Managing Director Arun Kumar's team wanted to get involved in the community but most volunteer opportunities require a routine schedule. His team was constantly traveling so committing to a set day and time each week would be difficult. However, Upwardly Global's compelling mission and its flexible mentoring program appealed to Arun as his team could interact with new immigrants, not just in person, but by phone and email, which worked well with BearingPoint consultants' busy schedules.

Lunch-n-Learn -- April 2004

BearingPoint employees met Upwardly Global's jobseekers - professionals originally from Uganda, Mexico, Benin, Somalia and Colombia - at a "Lunch-n-Learn" at BearingPoint's Mountain View office. "This is a recruiter's dream," commented Stephen Wells, BearingPoint's Global Sales and Executive Recruiting Director, after hearing about the educational and professional backgrounds of Upwardly Global's jobseekers. The volunteers enthusiastically offered contacts and advice on the spot to these new immigrants looking to rebuild their careers in the US.

You're Hired -- Two Weeks Later

At the Lunch-n-Learn, Bearing Point realized that two Upwardly Global members were a perfect fit for two open BearingPoint consulting positions. Andrea Garcia, from Mexico, was hired as a management analyst on the BearingPoint engagement team serving a multinational credit card company, and Kahder Bara, from Benin, was hired as a management analyst on the BearingPoint engagement team serving a global software developer. "BearingPoint is very diverse, with clients and employees across the globe from Amsterdam to Auckland and Boston to Beijing," said BearingPoint managing director Kumar. "We value diversity as it strengthens our teams and allows us to better serve our global customers. We are therefore particularly pleased to work with Upwardly Global."

Mentoring and More

Beyond mentoring and hiring jobseekers, BearingPoint also participates in Upwardly Global's Employer Network. Stephen Wells became a member of Upwardly Global's Workplace Diversity Advisory Council and was a panelist at the Silicon Valley seminar in June. His constructive insight into integrating immigrants into the workplace has been invaluable.

The Perfect Team

Shelley Hansen, a BearingPoint Community Involvement committee member, remarked, "We are very pleased to have connected with Upwardly Global and look forward to more and more synergy developing between our organizations. Giving back to the community through active participation is an important part of our culture at BearingPoint."
