Upwardly Global - New York Celebrates Immigrant History
“New York City owes its greatness to the generations of people who have come here from around the world in pursuit of their dreams. The events of [Immigrant History] week showcase the work and contributions of immigrants that make our City such a dynamic place to live and work and remind us that our city will continue to be a gateway for people seeking a better life.”
-Mayor Michael Bloomberg New York City has a rich cultural heritage, filled with people who have come from around the world, settled and established communities, and shared the cultures of their native lands. To commemorate this history, New York City celebrated Immigrant History Week from April 16th - 22nd. Established by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2004, the event is coordinated by the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and offers a series of to build cross-cultural awareness and understanding between all New Yorkers.
Upwardly Global staff, sporting bright orange caps and thousands of flyers, participated in the festivities by getting out into over 20 immigrant communities and speaking to community leaders, organizers, and members of the community at-large. Going to and from the subway, on the street, and outside grocery stores, libraries, restaurants, and other local businesses, Upwardly Global staff members shared the mission and the services of Upwardly Global and their enthusiasm for the value immigrant professionals bring to New York City .
The result: Most importantly, more immigrant professionals are aware of Upwardly Global’s services. Since the outreach was conducted, the New York office has seen an upswing in jobseeker inquiries, particularly from previously untapped Asian communities. In addition, inquiries from media, community groups and other immigration-related non-profits will continue to help Upwardly Global reach more immigrant professional jobseekers in the area.
