Volunteering to help Iraqi professionals rebuild their careers
The Opportunity: Honoring the Iraqi contribution by helping refugees rebuild their careers
Thousands of Iraqi professionals risked their lives working as translators, interpreters and cultural advisors to serve the US government during the war in Iraq. More than 250 have been killed and others faced death threats. About 500 have fled to the US under a recent government program that grants special visas for these Iraqi allies but does not provide any government services to help them find jobs in the US. Without any real support, these Iraqi professionals are unemployed and desperate. In the Land of Opportunity, the only opportunities they have found are as janitors, cashiers, and dishwashers.
Upwardly Global and The List Project, two small, private non-profit organizations, are committed to helping these professionals rebuild their careers in the US.
Career Summit: A Two Day Workshop for Iraqi Professionals
Washington, DC - Sunday, June 8 and Monday, June 9, 2008
This two-day conference includes job search skills workshops, one-on-one resume development, interview practice, small group advising by Upwardly Global staff experts, industry roundtables and networking with American professionals. A special industry roundtable and advising session will be offered for Iraqi professionals with strong backgrounds in translation. After the event, the project continues with ongoing mentorship and placement for the Iraqis.
