Professional Immigrant Job Search Workshops

As part of our services, Upwardly Global offers interactive workshops for immigrant professionals. Participants receive a booklet of reference materials for each workshop that they can use throughout their job search. Workshops are facilitated by experienced trainers - HR professionals and former professional immigrants - who share their proven strategies for career success in the United States.

Professional Immigrant Job Search Strategies for Marketing Yourself

This is Upwardly Global's foundation workshop for jobseekers. Candidates will learn to focus their career goals, learn about transferable skills, and develop a "marketing pitch" about themselves in order to answer the question: "What kind of job are you looking for?" Topics include:

  • Identifying knowledge, abilities, accomplishments and transferable skills
  • Creating and practicing strategies to market your skills and experience for the job search
  • Exploring various paths for your career
  • Accessing resources for the job search

 

Networking for Immigrant Professionals

Building and using a network to find career opportunities is an essential part of any job search. This workshop demystifies American networking customs for immigrant jobseekers through a combination of interactive exercises. Participants will learn:

  • How to find networking leads
  • How to conduct an informational interview
  • How to approach strangers at networking events
  • Accepted forms of interaction and follow-up

Interview Skills for Immigrant Professionals

In this two-hour workshop jobseekers gain the skills they need to confidently conduct interviews with American employers. There is time to practice interviewing skills in small groups and get feedback from American human resources professionals and hiring managers. Participants will learn:

  • How to prepare for an American-style interview
  • Ways to focus American employers on experience from their home country (and away from lack of U.S. experience)
  • How to answer tough "behavioral" type questions
  • Approaches for closing and following-up after interviews.

Surviving in the American Workplace (SAW I), Basics of Communicating

Landing a professional position is the first step; starting a new job and mastering the American work environment is the next challenge. This workshop helps newcomers identify American cultural values and how they influence the workplace. Participants gain strategies for integrating easily into the team and quickly becoming valuable contributors. Topics include:

  • Presenting yourself in the workplace
  • Cultural Values/Your cultural contribution
  • What to expect when you begin your job
  • American communication styles and useful expressions

Surviving in the American Workplace (SAW II), Basics of Socializing

This workshop goes further into topic covered in SAW I. Topics include:

  • Handling yourself in the workplace
  • Socializing/Etiquette in the workplace
  • Strategies for successful integration in the workplace
  • Information on workplace behavior laws

Mock Interview Practice Workshop for Immigrant Professionals

This workshop occurs once every 3 months on a Saturday morning for 3 hours. Jobseekers willbe interviewed by volunteer interviewers for two sets of interviews. In each interview the jobseeker is asked specific questions pertaining to his/her profession and the given feedback on his/her performance. The interview is one of the most important parts of a job search and this workshops helps jobseekers sharpen their interviewing skills.
