For Volunteers

Want a volunteer opportunity with finite, tangible results? One that uses all those professional skills you've been sharpening for years? Mentor a newcomer! In an increasingly global market, volunteering with Upwardly Global is a great way to be exposed to foreign cultures and excahnge cultural knowledge.

The Need: We are seeking professionals, established in the US workplace, to provide advice, insider insight and contacts for immigrant colleagues who are trying to re-establish their careers in the U.S. A small time commitment on your part makes a huge difference in the career (and life!) of an immigrant professional.

The Requirements: Our jobseekers represent many professional fields. We've helped professionals with backgrounds in engineering, accounting, marketing, biology, health care, medicine, nonprofit, journalism, business, and many more. Volunteers with a few years of experience from all fields are welcomed.

The Benefit:

  • Help an unnoticed pool of talented, educated, and experienced professionals from developing countries to be recognized by corporate America .
  • Use and strengthen your own professional skills to guide immigrant peers.
  • Network and build your existing professionals contacts.

The Choices: Our volunteers are advisors, mentors, trainers, and mock interviewers. Upwardly Global can also use help with Corporate Volunteer Recruitment, Public Relations, Fundraising, Technology, and Event Coordination.

The Results: Our jobseekers tell us that they value the advice and mentoring as much, if not more, than the direct job placement services. In many cases you will be the first American the immigrant meets who takes him/her seriously as a professional, and with whom they can discuss their profession and industry. You will help your mentee navigate through a very unfamiliar system to rebuild a career and a life. As we all know, who you know can be very important, and for newcomers who do not have a network, you will play a critical role in making them feel welcomed into a professional community.

Advisors and mentors help jobseekers go from unemployment or low-wage, low-skill jobs to professional positions that use their experience, skills and education. They become more self confident, self-sufficient, and able to contribute their talents to their communities and our society. Advisors and mentors help change lives!
