Groundbreaking Internship Model Opens Career Pathways for 100 Immigrants with International Healthcare Credentials

As we take lessons from over a year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Upwardly Global has been working hard to create opportunities and have critical discussions surrounding immigrant and refugee healthcare professionals.

Our partnership with NewYork-Presbytarian has paved the way for dozens of paid internships and is changing the way we see immigrant and refugee professionals supporting healthcare. 

The Migration Policy Institute hosted a webinar with Upwardly Global’s CEO Jina Krause-Vilmar and our partner at NewYork-Presbyterian Shaun Smith — it was attended by over 250 agencies, NGOs, philanthropists, policy makers and scholars. We shared a cohesive view of the economic context within which the brain waste issue is playing out, of state legislative possibilities, and of the way in which employers can seize on the opportunities that internationally trained medical professionals offer in meeting their ongoing staffing needs. The session provided both a road map for the field and, at least to us, a tangible sense of possible progress. You can listen to the webinar here.

Our May Ambassadors meeting focused on the contributions immigrants and refugees make to the healthcare industry, and what we can do to support them. The webinar was hosted by Upwardly Global Board Member, Kathy Taylor, and featured our very own Jina Krause-Vilmar as a moderator. Together they were in conversation with Dr. Syra Madad (Senior Director, System-wide Special Pathogens Program at New York City Health + Hospitals), Shaun E. Smith (Senior Vice-President, Chief People Officer at New York-Presbyterian Hospital), and Dr. Jan Vilcek (Biomedical Scientist, Educator, Inventor, and Philanthropist).
