Healthcare Language Services: Immigrants Provide Vital Services to Chicago’s Global Community

Kim Taylor

Founder and President

Healthcare Language Services is an organization that improves the lives of Chicago citizens and visitors by providing expert medical interpretation services for non-English speaking patients at hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the Chicagoland area.

Kim Taylor, the founder and president of HLS was building her new and growing business in early 2009 as Upwardly Global launched its Chicago office. She was one of the first employers to join our Chicago network and has been regularly hiring Upwardly Global candidates ever since. Kim has wholeheartedly helped us spread the message that growing businesses can thrive by accessing the many talented immigrant professionals who now call Chicago home.

Many healthcare professionals have joined HLS as interpreters including physicians who are preparing for their US certification exams and residency search. With a flexible schedule, these individuals are able to work around their study for exams. Language professionals with experience in translation and interpretation have also made ideal candidates for HLS.

Munera was a University Professor in linguistics in Krgyzstan, fluent in English, Russian, Kyrgyz and Uzbek. In the U.S., she was driving a taxi before joining the Upwardly Global program. Kim hired Munera as a Contract Interpreter but quickly promoted her to Operations Manager. Together, Kim and Munera run a thriving business and are a great example of impact of Upwardly Global’s employer partnerships.
