Dear <<First Name>>

As we shift into spring, Upwardly Global has been busy supporting career pathways for thousands of immigrant and refugee professionals. We closed new partnerships with employers, community organizations, and visionary donors that will ensure greater access to opportunities for newcomers. The average salary increase for alumni year-to-date is currently over $59,000.

For years, we have forcefully advocated that workforce support must be an integral part of how we help immigrants and refugees. As we prepare to welcome 100,000 Ukrainians fleeing war, these efforts are more important than ever.

Recognizing the immense barriers women in particular must scale to find family-supporting jobs, we are launching a campaign to help 1,000 immigrant and refugee women. We look forward to sharing some amazing stories, and hope you'll share yours and join us by making a contribution in any amount in tribute and to pay forward.

Check out more highlights from the month, below!

Sincerely,
The Upwardly Global Team

JOIN US IN HONORING + SUPPORTING WOMEN THIS SPRING

We've seen many brave mothers this past year in Ukraine, Afghanistan, and beyond. Upwardly Global is launching a campaign to recognize women in our community, including mothers and caregivers. As we share powerful stories throughout the coming weeks, we hope you will join hundreds of volunteers and friends to pay tribute to caregivers in your life and to support those struggling to restart their lives today.

The first $25,000 in donations to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar, by the generosity of the Chavez Family Foundation! The funds we raise will support nearly 1,000 women in our program, giving them access to coaching and career training, upskilling, mentorship and networking opportunities.

Check out the campaign page here, and make a donation today in honor of a Mom in your life.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR UKRANIAN REFUGEES

Upwardly Global is supporting Ukrainian refugees coming to the United States. Ukrainian citizens can now be sponsored for humanitarian parole under the Uniting for Ukraine Program.

Last week, the U.S. government shared the first set of procedures for eligible Ukrainians to apply for temporary protected status. We also announced a partnership with Welcome.US in an initiative to mobilize 100,000 Americans to sponsor people fleeing the war in Ukraine and support their safe and expedited entry and inclusion into the U.S., including securing jobs at their skill level. Differentiated workforce supports are critical as approximately 60% of Ukrainian women -- the vast majority of refugees -- hold BA degrees or higher. These new efforts build on years of work by Welcoming America and other organizations and individuals to activate the American public to support immigrant and refugee inclusion.

UPWARDLY GLOBAL AND PIVOTAL VENTURE
TO SUPPORT IMMIGRANT, REFUGEE WOMEN OF COLOR

Upwardly Global is teaming up with Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrant Refugees (GCIR) – the nation’s philanthropy-mobilizing organization focused on advancing immigrant and refugee justice – to address and dismantle systemic barriers that immigrant women of color face to economic security. The partnership is made possible due to a grant from Pivotal Ventures, and directly aligns with their goal advancing social progress for women and families in the United States.

Working collaboratively over the next three years, GCIR and Upwardly Global will build economic inclusion and social power across class, industry and geography for immigrant and refugee women of color through movement building, skilling, and investing in mutual aid networks and worker cooperatives. Upwardly Global will leverage its network of 150+ employer partners to engage the private sector, while GCIR will mobilize its network of 140+ local, state, and national funders to invest in this population.

UPGLO CEO JINA KRAUSE-VILMAR JOINS PANEL OF EXPERTS AT MPI

Nearly 200 Policy Makers, influencers and academics joined a webinar hosted by Migration Policy Institute asking: "With Millions of Unfilled U.S. Jobs, What Role Is There for Immigration?" CEO & Jina Krause-Vilmar joined as an expert panelist.

The webinar comes as the country continues to face labor shortages and looks to a post-covid recovery. Jina spoke on the intersections and barriers facing immigrants and those of color while highlighting UpGlo's recent success in partnering with employers like NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

The discussion highlighted three policy approaches that leverage immigrants’ talents to address labor and skills shortages and add value to our society and communities: tapping the existing skills of underemployed college-educated immigrants, increasing immigrant adults’ access to postsecondary credentials, and understanding immigration as a source of future talent for our communities and workplaces.

UPWARDLY GLOBAL WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBER TONY GONCALVES
Upwardly Global is thrilled to welcome Tony Goncalves, former Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer at Warner Media, as the newest member of our Board.

“As a proud, first-generation Portuguese immigrant and business leader, it’s important to me and my family that everyone has the opportunity to rise to the level of their talents and contribute to a country that gives them the freedom to make a better life. Upwardly Global’s mission is close to my heart and I look forward to furthering my involvement,” Tony said.

Tony will once again co-chair Upwardly Global's Gala and has partnered with MediaLink CEO Michael Kassan in this role.

With parents who immigrated from Portugal when he was just four years old, Tony grew up understanding what it meant to start from scratch in a new country and sacrifice for your children’s future. He is committed to opening more opportunities for immigrants and refugees today and works to ensure that we are a welcoming country, practicing kindness in his own life and work.

2022 POLICY REVIEW: UKRAINE UPDATE AND AFGHAN RESPONSE

Employment is essential to the settlement and integration process, providing refugees with a sense of agency and strengthening ties to their new communities as well as introducing needed support for host economies. This is so important as we look at immigrant and refugee movements across the world, including the 5.3 million refugees who have fled Ukraine to date.

With thousands of compelling stories of immigrant and refugee inclusion from our own work every day, and a deep, real-world understanding of how we can overcome barriers to unlock opportunity, Upwardly Global has an important role to play in forwarding policies that can make a real difference for our communities and country. In addition, by helping policymakers, employers and community representatives come together around shared goals, we have a critical role in supporting strong policy implementation to ensure impact.

Our policy recommendations for 2022 focus on how we can help shift systems to promote inclusion with critical partners on the ground — employers, policymakers, and grassroots organizations. Check our this work and get involved by emailing us at reply@upwardlyglobal.org

EMPLOYERS DISCUSS NEW GOOGLE PROJECT TO PROMOTE INCLUSION

Upwardly Global's Employer Partnership team is hosting bi-monthly Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Working Group sessions with more than 30 select employers. The goal is to support knowledge-sharing and cooperation and help create and meaningfully advance inclusive hiring practices.

The April meeting focused on updating employers on the Ukrainian crisis; including the skills and education of this population, and on Afghan refugee hiring now that Safe Havens have slowed operations. Additionally, Walmart and Deloitte shared new efforts to support refugees.

Our partners at Accenture announced a Google-funded Upwardly Global project to build out employer-led digital learning pathways and tools for employers to reach DEI goals and support immigrant and refugee professionals and led a collaborative discussion among the group.

Our partnership program continues to grow with support from Amazon/AWS, Cummins, Deloitte, HiredScore, LinkedIn, Multiverse, NBC Universal, NewYork-Presbyterian, OC Tanner, PAGNY, Salesforce, US Cellular, and Workday.

If you are interested in getting involved in our employer engagement work, please contact Kim Cohen, Director of Employer Engagement at kim@upwardlyglobal.org.
