About Joshua Garner

Joshua Garner is the Director of Strategic Communications for Upwardly Global. In that role, he oversees branding, communications, storytelling and media engagement for the organization and its network of jobseekers and alumni.

Joshua is a 15-year veteran of news media and communications. As a reporter and news editor, Joshua has worked for The Washington Post. Co, The New York Times Co., The Washington Informer, The Washington Business Journal, and AOL where he reported on regional politics, race, education, and infrastructure.

Joshua has built or expanded communications teams at nonprofits and corporations. He has created and implemented strategic communications plans for Advancement Project, American Public Human Services Association (APHSA), the Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE), and Men’s Health Network. In 2018, Joshua led media outreach and strategy for the Hispanic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., a gathering of the nation’s top Latinx leaders of faith that included keynote addresses from former Vice President Mike Pence, House Speakers Paul Ryan and Nancy Pelosi.

In 2021, Joshua’s work was recognized by the Ragan Crisis Communications Awards for his campaign work in social justice.
