Shaun E. Smith, JD is Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer at NewYork-Presbyterian.

A senior human resources professional with a legal background and a proven track record in multiple industries, Mr. Smith has 20+ years of experience in Human Resources that has helped shape organizations’ success through people. Shaun possesses an excellent understanding of healthcare, business operations, budgets and key people management approaches in strengthening business through people. He also has experience presenting to, participating in and chairing boards as a fiduciary who understands the principles of board leadership, ethics and success drivers for several non-profit organizations.

Mr. Smith has over 25 years of human resources, legal, and health care management experience, including leadership roles at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, New York, where he served as the Chief Human Resource Officer. Mr. Smith joined NewYork-Presbyterian in 2012 as Vice President of Human Resources, NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell.

As NewYork- Presbyterian evolved, he took on the responsibility of providing strategic direction and oversight of human resources across NewYork-Presbyterian for NYP’s 47,000 employees who provide care at 10 hospital campuses and more than 200 primary and specialty care clinics in New York City and the surrounding communities. In Mr. Smith’s current role as SVP and Chief People Officer, he is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s people strategy and leadership of human resources operations, including talent acquisition, training and organizational development, total rewards, employee and labor relations, workforce health and safety, and diversity & inclusion.

In addition to serving on Upwardly Global’s Board, Mr. Smith is a member of the Boards of Trustees of Pace University, The Center of Community Alternatives, The Rogosin Institute, and START Treatment and Recovery Centers in New York City. He has also served on a number of Boards in the past, including the N. Country Workforce Investment Board and Behavioral Health Services North.

Mr. Smith received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration and his law degree from Pace University. He was an adjunct professor of Human Resources Management at the State University of New York in Plattsburgh and currently serves as the Associate Dean for the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences.
