After a successful launch in San Francisco, Upwardly Global brought Picture Day to our New York City office, where job seekers, alumni, and volunteers alike gathered for an afternoon of professional photography, conversation, and community.
Headshots That Open Doors
A professional headshot is more than just a picture — it’s a first impression that can unlock doors to meaningful employment and shape careers. In today’s highly competitive digital job market, a high-quality headshot can help job seekers establish credibility and stand out to employers.
The event aims to empower newcomers in their job search by offering free headshots in a welcoming space designed to support immigrant and refugee professionals.
Picture Day NYC was made even more special by our photographer, Magali Gomez — a talented Upwardly Global job seeker — whose expertise and warmth helped participants feel at ease in front of the camera, capturing each participant’s confidence and potential.
Where Community Comes Into Focus
The event brought together members of our New York community. Between photo sessions, participants connected over shared experiences, discussed job search strategies, and built professional relationships.
Participants filled out surveys within days after the event, rating their overall experience 10 out of 10.
One attendee shared:
“The event was very well organized and easy to understand upon arrival. The friendly and professional atmosphere helped to ease any uncertainty. The snacks and drinks were fresh and delicious. Many thanks to the organizers and everyone who took part; it was a useful and memorable meeting.”
Another requested:
“Please repeat this event more than once a year!”
Looking Ahead
Picture Day NYC proved that this model works — not just for providing a needed resource, but for creating moments of genuine connection and mutual support. As we bring this initiative to more of our offices nationwide, we’re learning what makes these events meaningful and how to reach even more professionals who could benefit.
The photos matter. But so does the community support that comes with them.
