Spectrum News 1 published a Spanish-language video this week highlighting the Professional Pathways Program from the New York State Office for New Americans, which Upwardly Global proudly leads. In the piece, reporter Anny Ruiz Huayamabe interviews Upwardly Global Alum Juan Beltrán, an immigrant from Colombia who struggled to find skill-aligned work after moving to New York. Through help from the Professional Pathways Program, Juan was able to restart his career in publicity, something he was unable to do during his first three years in the U.S.

“You feel a lot of happiness and you feel a lot of pride; it’s something that is difficult to explain sometimes,” Juan told NY1 News in his native Spanish. “Because sometimes you don’t think you are capable of achieving it, and sometimes it simply requires work and to believe in yourself and not wait for something to happen … but to always keep going.”

New York Secretary of State Robert Rodríguez endorsed the program, explaining the requirements for entry and how helping immigrant and refugee New Yorkers to achieve their career goals boosts the state economy. “We are trying to connect people who have a lot of experience, but when they come to this state and this country, they are doing the work that they have to do on a daily basis to survive,” said Rodríguez. “But they are not really connecting with the industries that need their services … to use their expertise and education that they bring with them.”
